How to make Beef shawarma at home (Nigerian Style)

Shawarma has got to be the most popular street snack almost everyone enjoys. It’s also pretty easy to make at home. The only hitch you might encounter is finding a good place close to your vicinity where the pita bread (Shawarma bread) could be bought. There are various types of shawarma such as Beef shawarma, Chicken shawarma, Fish shawarma, e.t.c and each shawarma has its own unique taste. Now I’m going to make it really simple. For the Hot press (To seal and Heat up the wrapped shawarma), you could make do with a sandwich Toaster if you’ve got one or simply a frying pan….They both serve the same function only that one heats both ways (Most times leaving Sandwich lines) and the other heats one way leaving no line at all. It’s pretty straight forward ;)

•Prep time: Less than 20 minutes
•Cook time: Less than 30 minutes
•Yield: 10 Shawarma Wraps

Ingredients:::
• 4 medium sized Carrots
• 1 small Cabbage
• 2 medium Sized Green bell pepper
• 1 medium sized cucumber
• 2 tbsp. chili powder
• Ketchup
• 14 chunks beef (You could also use Chicken or fish)
• 2 Scotch bonnets (Yellow/Red pepper)
• 1 small onion
•2 seasoning cubes
• ¼ bulb Ginger
• 4 cloves Garlic
•1 tsp. Salt
•1 tsp. Curry
• ½ tsp. thyme
• 3 tbsp. Vegetable oil

Preparation/Directions:::

Step 1: Chop the cabbage, Grate the carrots, Dice the green pepper & slice the cucumber- Set aside separately

Step 2: Dice the beef and place in a Small pot. Blend the Onion, garlic, ginger, Scotch bonnets and pour into the pot with diced beef. Season with the stock cubes, Salt, Curry & thyme. Add some water and cook till tender for about 15mins. Once done, stir fry in vegetable oil for 3 mins.

To assemble:::

Step 3: Get one pita bread and open the pocket (This divides it into two). Place one on top of the other.

Step 4: Rub mayonnaise over the bread on top. Add the cabbage, carrot, green pepper, cucumber, Beef – Sprinkle with powdered chili and drizzle with ketchup and more mayonnaise

Step 5: Fold to seal the contents and place on the pan (Greased with a little vegetable oil). Reduce the burner to the barest minimum and let the shawarma heat up on the side with the open flap . Flip and do the same for the other side.

Step 6: Yep! Your beef shawarma is ready. Serve.

Remember, portion control is one of the secrets to healthy living……..

RECIPE OF THE DAY...NIGERIAN PEPPER SOUP :)

Credit: avartsycooking.com

Have you ever wondered how to prepare Pepper soup? Be it fish, beef,Chicken or even Goat meat. You have got to stop right here because there are beautiful steps to prepare this sumptuous meal for yourself, family and Visitors this 2014. Trust me,it is economical, easy and above all, delicious. For Nigerians living in diaspora, what are you waiting for?lol...
Thanks to avartsycooking.com for sharing this...

nigerian peppersoup
Nigerian Pepper Soup is an incredibly spicy, intensely flavored and aromatic broth like soup made primarily from a blend of native seeds and good amount of water, to which small cuts of a protein of choice is always added. The protein could either be in the form of goat meat, shaki/tripe/towel, cow skin/kpomo, chicken, fish, turkey. The protein component of the soup could also be the innards or offals of an animal or parts of the animal that would normally be discarded. Some of these parts could include intestines, hearts, liver and other such parts.
The choice of protein to use is purely either out of preference or financial instability. If one is relatively ‘boxed up,’ or rich, you could get choice parts of meat, but if finances are scarce and one is on a 0-1-0 or 0-0-1 or 1-0-0 diet, then the cheapest parts would obviously be the innards/offals. *0-1-0 means no breakfast, lunch and no dinner :: 0-0-1 means no breakfast, no lunch and dinner while 1-0-0 means breakfast, no lunch and no dinner. You could make other number variations as well, it’s a Nigerian ‘thing,’ lol.*
Nigerian Peppersoup is eaten year round in Nigeria, despite the hot weather. It is a soup that has the capacity to stop a cold/flu in it’s tracks if done the proper way.  Lots of Nigerians love to eat peppersoup (I’m yet to come across one that doesn’t! Actually, I don’t really care for it unless I’m down with a cold). However, the bone of contention that often stumps those who attempt to make it are the ingredients used in the soup. There’s always the case of ‘if I see it, I’ll know it! I just don’t know what it’s called!) As mentioned in the opening paragraph, native seeds are really what bring the soup to life. These seeds are then ground and added to water (or stock). *see #6 in notes for information on using water or stock).

Now, on with it! To learn how to make Nigerian Pepper Soup, here’s what you’ll need:

 Notes:

  1. You don’t have to use habanero peppers, but I like to do so for that extra kick of pepper. If you decide to use it, you can always vary the amount you use based on how hot you want it to be.
  2. Some like to add a small amount of palm oil as the last step in the cooking process. This is a step I skip, but if you wish, you are more than welcome to do so.
  3. To eat your pepper soup, you can add small cuts of boiled yam into it as well for a more satisfying soup.
  4. You can either use water to make your pepersoup or you could use a spice grinder to grind the ingredients into a powder form and then add that to stock from boiling the meat. However, because the primary base of peppersoup is the liquid, I prefer not to use stock as it is more concentrated and the stock from goat meat and shaki and kpomo is quite strong and unappealing to me. However, if doing so is easier for you, by all means, go with that method.
  5. The garlic cloves are added to the boiling stage of the meats to quicken up the softening process, this is optional. Sliced onions can also be used.
  6. Crushed red pepper is optional for boiling the goat meat.
  7. I used skinless goat meat, since I was already using kpomo. You can do both or either or, I just thought it would be overdoing it.
  8. If you don’t have a powerful enough blender, you can get away with using a mortar if you have one. If you have neither, you can try soaking the seed ingredients overnight in a bowl of room temperature water to help soften it up and not totally destroy your blender.
  9. Adding the leftover habanero/crayfish/nchawu blend is optional. If you prefer just a clear, brown liquid, you can skip adding it in, however, if you’d like the texture, you can add it in. I also removed the rodo/habanero seeds floating in the liquid. The seeds hold most of the heat, not the skin.
  10. You don’t have to use up all the liquid in one day, you can freeze some for another day and just boil some meat or your choice of protein and thaw the liquid, boil, add some knorr cubes and the boiled meat and you have quick peppersoup!
  11. When you add the crayfish remnants back into the liquid, they will settle to the bottom of the bowl, but once you start boiling, they will float to the top.
  12. Conversely, you can also buy the pre-ground pepper soup spice from African markets/stores. I just like to do things from scratch :), plus buying the powder would mean adding it to stock :(

Substitutes:

  1. You can use any combination of meats to your heart’s desire. Though not a huge fan of peppersoup, my favorite combo is goat meat, shaki and kpomo. Catfish peppersoup is the probably the second most popular version.
  2. You can replace the nchawu/scent leaves with bitterleaves or ukazi/utazi. The main thing is to use leaves that have a slightly bitter element to them and the leaves are to be chopped up into smaller pieces.

Serving Suggestions:

I have this simply with a bottle of cold water! You can add some small pieces of boiled yam in there to make it more hearty if you like!

20 THINGS TO DO BEFORE YOU ARE 30

Listened to this mind blowing message and discovered that many young people just exist without doing something deliberate about planning their future. Too many excuses put people in one position. A man who cannot plan has nothing to live for because life places a demand on you to plan. If you have a purpose to pursue, it becomes natural upon your responsiblity to... plan.
Theses are the 20 things you should do before you clock 30
1.Discover yourself. It is discovery that enlists you for life, not necessarily birth. You can be born but you are useless until you discover yourself. Its not about wealth. You can be wealthy but not great. The greatest thing that can happen to you is self discovery.

2.You must have learnt how to use your giftings to solve problems definitely.Your purpose has the capacity of employing for life. Men of purpose are always tired because there is always something to do with something that they have.

3.You must have caught some ideas on how to make Money. Some of you have wacked mentality on what money is. The fact there is fake paracetamol doesn't mean all paracetamols are fake. If you are a book writer, makeup artist, blogger etc, know how to channel your work professionally. You make money from people's ignorance either genuinely or cunningly.

4.You must have known the definition of love. Many young men and ladies have a misconception of what love is.Love isn't looking enchanting, seductive or 'sexy'. You cannot love someone you met at the first time. You can like him/her or be attracted. Love doesn't stop at emotions. Love is a choice.Love is a responsibility. Its much more about giving. Sex is worth waiting for. If you are a lady,do not get married to man that cannot control his 'below the belt faculty'. If a man loves you,he can wait for you. He will make himself deserve you. You are not an emotional dumping ground and not a dustbin for someone's emotional errors.

5.You must have read atleast thirty books. Have a library. Invest in Books. If your future is important to you,you become more serious about the benchmarks you set. Before you get married, ask your spouse if he/she has a library. Empty minds attract themselves. You save for shoes, gadgets, clothes, jewelries but never for books. Don't be just fine for nothing.

6.You should have a pastor. There is something about a pastoral covering. Many Christians do not know the role of a spiritual covering over your life. Jer 3:15-16

7.You should be known for something. Great men are not known for everything. They are known for specifics.

8.You should have a Mentor. People you can keep correspondence with. Don't be emotional about choosing a mentor because instead of being mentored, you fall in love. Have a vison and a focus.

9.You must learn how to say NO. That's one of the signs of maturity. Saying No without feeling guilty.

10.You must have conquered procrastination. Some of you have great ideas, dreams, potentials but have never achieved them. Procrastination is a lazy man's apology.

11.You should be free to use your mind. If your life is not going well, check who has been doing the thinking for you. Avoid pressures from family, friends and T.V.

12.You must have a Bank Account. Before you get married, ask your spouse if he has a bank account.

13.You should have an investment. One of the cheapest we all can have is buying shares.

14.You must have developed stability of character. You should be taken for your words. Avoid inconsistency. When will you be believed? Say what you mean and mean what you say. Put your self under self-control.

15.You should be able to choose your friends by yourself.

16.Learn professional dining etiquettes. Learn to nake use of cutleries well. Hygiene matters as well. Please learn to take good care of your self from your mouth to your poise. EVERYTHING!.

17.You should know how to drive a Car.

18.Write your vision statement in a sentence. Know your vision.

19.You must have the financial ability to feed someone else.

20.You must be Born Again. You should know how to love God-the ever Living and Omnipotent God. The one who is everly faithful even in your unfaithfulness. The One who blessed mankind witht he greatest gift. He sent His Son Jesus Christ to die that we shall have everlasting life
We are about entering a New Year. i wish you the very best as you begin a new life in Christ Jesus.
God bless you.
